Estimate Reading Time for Books and Chapters
Paste a chapter or excerpt to estimate how long it takes to read at different reading speeds.
Average speeds: Adults read at 200–250 wpm silently. Audiobooks are narrated at 120–150 wpm. Speed readers can reach 500–700 wpm with comprehension drop-off.
Medium articles: ~1,200 words (~5 min). Long-form: ~2,500 words (~10 min). Books average 70,000–90,000 words (~5–6 hours at 250 wpm).
Books tips
The average novel chapter is 3,000–5,000 words (12–20 min). Knowing this helps readers plan reading sessions around their schedule.
Non-fiction books average 60,000 words. At 238 WPM: ~4.2 hours total. Broken into 20-min sessions, that's about 12–13 sessions to finish.
Switch to the "skimming" speed (700 WPM) to estimate how long a first pass through a reference book or textbook chapter would take.
Publishers and editors use word count to estimate page count: roughly 250–300 words per printed page (depending on formatting and font size).
