Read 4-Band Resistor Colors
Decode the most common resistor type: two digits, a multiplier, and a tolerance band.
Digit 1
Digit 2
Multiplier
Tolerance
💡 Read bands from the end with the tolerance band (often gold or silver) on the right. 4-band resistors use two significant digits; 5- and 6-band use three for tighter precision.
4-Band tips
On a 4-band resistor the first two bands are significant digits, the third is the multiplier, the fourth is tolerance.
Hold the resistor with the gold or silver tolerance band on the right, then read left to right.
A gold tolerance band means ±5%, silver means ±10% — the two most common values.
