Different frameworks prefer different formats — Rails uses YAML, .NET uses JSON, Node.js apps are split. Convert configs when moving between ecosystems.
Spring Boot reads YAML and JSON interchangeably from application.yml or application.json. Convert if you prefer one format for your team.
When sharing config snippets in documentation, YAML is more readable for humans; JSON is universal for examples that need to be valid JavaScript.
Comments are YAML-only. When converting JSON → YAML, you can add comments by hand afterward. YAML → JSON will strip comments (JSON has no comment syntax).
