This is not the same as speed reading. The technique was developed by Swiss typographic designer Renato Casutt in 2016 and has been popularized by various reading apps. Email tips
For dense corporate emails or industry newsletters, bionic format speeds up the "should I read this carefully?" decision.
Lower fixation (30-40%) works well for casual scanning — high enough to guide, low enough not to disrupt natural reading.
