Instagram re-compresses every photo after upload. Pre-compressing to low quality causes double compression — your photo ends up blurry and washed out. Always upload at maximum quality.

Quality 95 preserves vivid colours and sharp edges that survive Instagram's compression. Going lower gives Instagram worse source material and a worse final result.
