Modern PWAs use the manifest.json with PNG icons at 192×192 and 512×512. The .ico is the fallback for browsers that don't support PWA manifest.

💡

For full PWA icon support, you also need: apple-touch-icon.png (180×180), favicon.ico (this tool), and manifest icons (192, 512).

Chrome on desktop uses the manifest for the install prompt; the .ico is only used for the browser tab. Both are still needed.

🎨

For maskable icons (used by Android), the inner safe area is 80% of the canvas — keep your logo centered and within that safe area.
