Compress old documents you rarely access but must keep. They take less space and are still readable when needed.
Use balanced compression for text-heavy documents (contracts, reports). Text remains sharp at even aggressive settings.
Keep an uncompressed backup of truly irreplaceable documents. Compression is safe but nothing beats a second copy.
