Create a Website Favicon from PNG

The standard favicon size set is 16×16, 32×32, and 48×48. Most browsers will pick the right size automatically from a single .ico file.

For best results, start with a square PNG at least 256×256. Logos with detail will lose readability at 16×16 — consider a simplified mark for the favicon.

Upload to /favicon.ico at your site root. Browsers speculatively request this path even without a <link rel="icon"> tag in your HTML.

Test your favicon at 16×16 by zooming out — that's how users see it in the tab bar. If it's muddy at small size, simplify the design.
