Aviation tips
VOR and NDB navigation beacons transmit their 2–3 letter identifier in Morse code. Pilots verify the beacon by listening and decoding the identifier.
Type any airport VOR or NDB identifier (e.g. LAX, JFK, ORD) to hear what the beacon's Morse signal should sound like.
IFR student pilots must learn to identify Morse code for instrument approaches. Practice decoding beacon IDs by listening to the audio playback here.
ATIS broadcasts use Morse code letters for the current information identifier (Bravo, Charlie, Delta…). Each cycle uses the next letter alphabetically.
